During the SITS Comment Hour last night, I discovered a new blog called The Science of Marriage. Jocelyn wrote a post about a good rule to apply before you speak: THINK.
T- Is it true?
H-Is it helpful?
I-Is it inspiring?
N-Is it necessary?
K-Is it kind?
I’m pretty careful to think before I speak in public and around friends, but I don’t apply the same rules at home. I whine, complain, yell, and just generally talk too much. This weekend, I’m going to make a poster with this acronym on it so I can look at it all the time. This is a good policy to carry with you in parenting, marriage, and all aspects of life.
Are you THINKing before you speak?

The acronym I use is WAIT:
Why
Am
I
Talking?
I had a ring engraved with that so I would remember to shut up and listen :)

This is great, Traci! Easy to remember, too. Thanks.
But always remember not to listen to people who are just stupid and say things which are not true. So always listen to those people who you think are good to listen. And that you learn something from them.
I think I got this from some article in Oprah: Is it true, is it necessary, is it kind, does it improve on the silence? I’ve been using it on the kids, i.e., saying it to them when they’re verbally offending me. :) I like the THINK acronym!

I just found your blog today and absolutely love it! I feel like we must have been separated at birth, as I struggle exactly as you do. Subscribing to your RSS feed and looking forward to some quiet moments later to read in the archives. Also, just ordered the Total Transformation based on your review and am so excited to see what its all about. I have never heard of it, but it looks great! And at least one of my half dozen blessings needs me to have it!

Love all the acronyms. Yes I always try to THINK & WAIT before speaking. My favorite is the line from Alice in Wonderland “If you don’t think then you shouldn’t talk!”
