Do Something Different

It’s week one of the Discipline Project and I’m inspired by a post I read called How To Change Bad Habits. I definitely have a habit every morning: checking email and Facebook. Usually with a cup of coffee and some sort of bread-based carb.

I’m officially ditching this habit. Yesterday and today I’ve woken up, drank some water and exercised. That will be my new morning routine.

Now, how to help myself stick to it? One thing I’m going to try is turning my computer off at night. If it’s on, all energetic and waiting for me in the morning, I am tempted to just look at my email (although I have no idea why because it’s rare that I get anything other than spam between bedtime and waking). Then it’s easy to get sucked in and suddenly I’m out of time to exercise.

The second thing I’m doing is allowing myself to just do a little exercise. In the past, the thought of doing an all-out workout when I’m not feeling motivated has been daunting enough to make me skip it. But I’m telling myself it’s OK to just do some push-ups or some crunches. Most of the time when I start out saying I’m just going to do push-ups, I end up doing more exercise anyway. It’s all about taking that first step and overcoming the inertia.

So here’s your challenge for the week: Do something different. Pick a small, specific behavior and change it. Tell me about it in a comment or on Twitter and we can hold each other accountable.

I have given up soda this week. Lord help me. The headache is setting in…gah! But I know I can do this, because I’ve done it before. :)

You can do it! Have you tried caffeinated tea to wean you off soda? Helps with the headache, you don’t get all the sugar and chemicals of the soda, and the flavored teas can be sweet and yummy.

I have a never ending “TO DO ” list, which I usually look at it, feel overwhelmed and then end up doing nothing about. This week I will take one item off my list every day and complete it. Totally doable, I just need to get to get it done.

The never-ending TO DO list….I am a victim of that, as well. But there is this great quote on Life Hacker: Productivity in 11 words- One thing at a time. Most important thing first. Start now.

Maybe that should be my mantra.

Exactly. Moving forward now is my mantra. *Just keep swimming, just keep swimming.* :-)

Shannon,
I started back in November with putting the exercise habit in place. I made myself get dressed and tennis shoes on before ever leaving the bedroom. Walk to the sink fill the water bottle and straight to the treadmill (I DO let the dogs out or they will bug me the whole time I walk!) I made myself just start with a 15 minute stroll. I tried to do everyday while building the habit.
I am now up to 35 minutes a day, and I have greatly increased my intensity and do intervals of speed and hills. I have only lost 4 pounds (not focusing a lot on diet right now) but I feel tighter and stronger, and I can climb a flight of stairs without getting winded! I usually take 2 days a week off now that it is a habit!
Good luck! Oh, and I love the Dory quote!

Hi!

I’m by from SITS and I am really loving your blog; it’s just what I need to motivate me. My ‘do something different’ is going to be starting the day with a walk with my dog – even for 15 mins. The poor pooch has been feeling neglected and it will wake me up – it’s hard not to be awake when it’s -15 outside.. :S

I start tomorrow…. I’ll keep you posted!
